Despite March still officially being the rainy season in Zimbabwe, this year’s rains have been slow to materialise and the country is approaching drought conditions in many areas. With the lack of rain, animals are struggling and volunteers are needed to help care for Zimbabwe’s orphaned, injured and abandoned primates. We’ve introduced a special offer for volunteering with primates to help the program during this busy time.

November to March is known as ‘orphan season’ for primates, particularly vervet monkeys and baboons, as it is during the rainy season that many give birth. Unfortunately, when the rains do not materialise, the plight for these animals can be dire.

Primate Conservation & Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife sanctuary volunteers play a vital role within the sanctuary. This is one of our most popular projects, where your tasks could include:

• Working hands-on with wildlife orphans and vulnerable animals.
• Raising baby and juvenile primates, including bottle feeding (often through the night), bush walks and troop reintroductions.
• Caring for a range of other species including zebra, ostrich, owls, raptors and bush babies, plus domestic animals and birds.
• Assisting with food collection, preparation and feeding for herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
• Accompanying primates (and usually a few other animals!) on bush walks, stimulating them to explore their natural habitat, forage, play in water, jump and interact as a group.
• Building toys, platforms, playgrounds and other enrichment objects.
• Caring for animals who are not current candidates for release due to mental or physical issues.
