Getting started: 10 tips for volunteering in Africa at Christmas
1. Is December a good time to volunteer in Africa?
December is a great time to volunteer in Africa! The period from November through to March in Southern Africa is known as the Green season – where the longed-for rains arrive and animals and plants come to life. Conservancies are quieter as fewer people travel, which makes the whole experience much more personal. It’s also a time when volunteers are really needed as numbers are lower but there is still important work to be done. December – February is also known as Orphan Season, where rehabilitation centres and wildlife facilities often see higher than normal intakes of orphaned, injured and abandoned babies.
2. What volunteer projects are open in Africa during Christmas and New Year?
All of our projects’ work continues year-round, and in many cases volunteers are welcomed to join the usually smaller-than-normal teams. A number of our volunteer projects in Africa are open over the Christmas and New Year holiday and we’ve included a list of them below.
