Endangered Wildlife Conservation, South Africa

Join a one-of-a-kind wildlife conservation program to save endangered and priority African wildlife species from extinction! 

  • Focus species include black and white rhinos, African wild dogs, vultures, cheetahs, elephants, lions, leopards and hyenas.
  • Work with experienced conservationists and wildlife experts, learning valuable skills while making a lasting impact.

Here’s how you’ll contribute to the conservation of endangered species during your time as a volunteer in South Africa:

  • Tracking and locating priority species in the wild on a daily basis.
  • Mapping sightings using GPS equipment
  • Observing animal behaviour for research purposes.
  • Photographing and creating identity kits (for recently-reintroduced or relocated animals).
  • Periodically setting up camera traps at watering holes and game trails.
  • Assisting with ongoing game counts if needed.

Conservation & Anti-Poaching Training, South Africa

Our exclusive Conservation & Anti-Poaching Training Programme is run by one of the most experienced and decorated rangers in southern Africa, a recognised anti-poaching expert.

  • Gain an understanding of conservation challenges, strategies and ethics.
  • Learn practical anti-poaching techniques in one of South Africa’s finest wilderness areas.

The course covers:

  • Wildlife identification and tracking including big game and mammal identification and behaviour studies.
  • Learn big game tracking skills, focusing on rhino tracking.
  • Learn human tracking skills and carry out practical exercises.
  • Tracks and spoor identification.
  • Develop an understanding of poachers and the poaching industry.
  • Learn about patrol planning, identifying poaching hotspots, the art of camouflage and surveillance, and ambush planning.

Marine Conservation, Mozambique

Southern Mozambique is one of the world’s top 10 scuba diving locations, home to large populations of whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales.

– Megafauna Research: focus species include manta ray, whale sharks and sea turtles.

The Mozambican manta ray database is the second largest in the world, with 800 individuals identified in the area. Tofo is also a global hotspot for the whale shark, the world’s largest fish, and to date more than 600 individuals have been identified in the area. All marine turtle species in Mozambique are endangered, and their nesting grounds have declined rapidly due to poaching.

  • Collect field data to assist research and conservation planning
  • Take identification photos and monitor behaviour
  • Check acoustic listening stations
  • Tag animals and collect tissue samples
  • Learn to use a dive log to record key information whilst diving
  • Observe and record environmental conditions
  • Update databases

Humpback Whale Research, Mozambique

Every year between July to September, hundreds of humpback whales migrate to Mozambique to breed and calve. The goal of the humpback whale research project is for marine biologists to gather data on the annual migration of whales in Southern Mozambique.

  • Participate in four boat based humpback whale research expeditions a week and whale watch from the stunning shores of southern Mozambique;
  • If it is safe to do so, enter the water for an unforgettable close-up encounter (no diving experience is necessary);
  • Collect data on humpback whale behaviour, movement patterns, habitat use and pod structures;
  • Record individual whale songs on a hydrophone;
  • Learn how to photographically identify individual whales to add to the Mozambique Whale Database;
  • Learn about humpback whale behaviour, ecology, anatomy, and life history.
