Our Rhino & Elephant Conservation Programme is ready to reopen!
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority announced earlier in September the opening of the country to international tourists from 1st October 2020. The Rhino & Elephant Conservation Programme is opening from 12th October with a spectacular 30% early bird discount! Experience the thrill of working with endangered wildlife and enjoy the peace and wide open spaces of the African bush. It’s been too long and it’s time to return!
This unique wildlife conservation volunteer programme combines rhino and elephant conservation work with community empowerment and education projects, game park management and wildlife research. The project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play an important role in the daily activities involved in the operation of a rhino conservancy, and become part of a dedicated, passionate conservation family.

Volunteers in Zimbabwe will usually get involved in some or all of the following activities:
- Learn about rhino conservation from experienced local guides, and what the reserve is doing to support the species in Zimbabwe;
- Learn to track and locate rhino using telemetry;
- Collect observational data on rhino and elephant behaviour, health, movements, interactions and browsing activities;
- Provide additional manpower for foot patrols and snare sweeps;
- Secure, repair and check boundary fences;
- Get a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes operation of a large conservation area;
- Deliver feed and nutritional supplements to sable, zebra, buffalo and other plains game;
- Undertake game counts and herd studies on foot, by vehicle and on horseback;
- Carry out indigenous tree planting, and invasive and alien species removal;
- Get involved with organic gardening, tree planting and beekeeping.
You can be sure that your days will be filled with interesting work that is genuinely needed, and you will always be doing something purposeful.
** Family-friendly volunteering!
This project is an amazing experience for family volunteer groups with children of all ages. We recommend five years old is the minimum, but please do get in touch if you have younger children, as the project can usually accommodate them. You and your family will have a dedicated guide and will do most of the activities on the normal volunteer programme, tailored to your interests and the ages of your children.
“My family of four (11 & 13 year old) spent two amazing weeks volunteering in June. It is difficult to embody the experience in words. My 11 year old daughter responded when asked about the trip that “…it was life changing.”. And indeed it was. We have travelled all over the world and this is the first place we have decided to return to – with plans to return in 2021. If you are at all inclined to do volunteer work abroad- this is a wonderful place to visit. Solo OR with family.”
