Why be a marine conservation volunteer in Mozambique?
Southern Mozambique is home to large populations of whale sharks, manta rays, endangered reef turtles and migratory humpback whales. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for close, personal encounters with these majestic, peaceful and beautiful animals, as you complete research data into habitat use, demographics and movement patterns.
The legendary beaches of Tofo and Barra boast some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling, and are a world-renowned scuba mecca. Mozambique is the ideal place to see Africa’s marine Big 5: whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, hammerhead sharks and reef sharks. The project is a perfect way to dive a spectacular destination and contribute to ocean conservation.
Climb aboard a traditional dhow, and sail through beautiful mangroves (marine forests); snorkel in the estuary and local coral reefs – swimming with colourful ocean creatures, right on your doorstep. Volunteers play a vital role in the ongoing preservation of the estuary, and the marine wildlife that make it their home.
The coastal area where you are based is the winter breeding ground of large numbers of humpback whale. Through July – Septemnber, whales come by the thousand to mate, give birth and rest, before migrating back to the Antarctic for their summer. This is a unique opportunity to join a world-renowned researcher on his annual expedition to collect data on Mozambique’s migratory whale populations. Help transform data into real solutions for whale conservation.
And if all that wasn’t enough, you will be living in a perfect beachside lodge, just a few steps away from the white, sandy beach. Eat fresh seafood, meet amazing people and contribute to vital marine research projects.
